WebMar 19, 2024 · The curvature of vortex lines in the vortex ring can lead to a weak (in the case of thin ring) interaction between perturbations whose structure is analogous to the structure of the Kelvin modes of the cylindrical vortex. WebA straight infinite vortex of finite cross section is deformed by the action of weak irrotational plane strain. The deformed vortex is shown, in the absence of axial flow, to be unstable to disturbances whose axial wavelengths lie in a narrow band, whose width is proportional to the imposed strain.
